Maldives

Indian Ocean

Private-island paradise. Overwater villas on house reefs, seaplane transfers over turquoise atolls. No cars, no news, no schedule. Days measured by sunrise yoga, a reef dive before lunch, lunch on your own deck, a dhoni at sunset, stargazing from a private observatory. Zero connectivity is an optional feature. Tropical sun and warm sea, reef fish in improbable colours, no crowds of any kind.

Best for honeymoons, off-grid escapes, anniversaries and solitude prescriptions.

The stillness

The Maldives is the rare place where the brochure understates the case. The ocean is bath-warm and impossibly clear. The day has no schedule. By the third morning you have stopped checking your phone for the time and started reading it from the sun.

The overwater villa

A serious villa has its own deck, its own ladder into the lagoon, its own freshwater plunge above the saltwater one. The fish gather under the deck at first light. The light through the slatted floor moves with the tide. You will not want to leave the room.

You will not want to leave the room.

The reef beneath

The house reef drops a few metres from the deck and falls away into the deep. A morning snorkel reveals turtles, mantas in season, twenty species of reef fish in colours that should not exist. The reef is what makes the place real.

Moments to plan around

  • A table on a private sandbank. Set at sunset. The chef arriving by boat. The ocean closing over the sand by midnight. Sunset.
  • Four hands in an overwater spa. A glass floor. Fish drifting underneath. Three hours of stillness. Afternoon.
  • Mantas at the cleaning station. Private dhoni. An untouched house reef. Encounters guaranteed in season. Morning dive.
  • A bioluminescent shore. A water taxi to a moonless cove on Vaadhoo. The plankton lighting the sand under your feet. Late night.

When to go

  1. January, about 12 hours of daylight, one of the best months
  2. February, about 12 hours of daylight, one of the best months
  3. March, about 12 hours of daylight, one of the best months
  4. April, about 12 hours of daylight, one of the best months
  5. May, about 12 hours of daylight
  6. June, about 12 hours of daylight
  7. July, about 12 hours of daylight
  8. August, about 12 hours of daylight
  9. September, about 12 hours of daylight
  10. October, about 12 hours of daylight
  11. November, about 12 hours of daylight
  12. December, about 12 hours of daylight, one of the best months

December through April is peak, settled weather, premium pricing. November and early May are shoulder, most of the sun, meaningfully less cost. August-October riskier for storms.

Before you walk in

What to know about greetings, the table and dress before you go.

  • What happens on the resort, stays on the resort

Each island runs its own micro-rules: bare feet, bikinis, beach service, alcohol, spa rituals, fully relaxed.

  • Cover up on local islands

Visiting an inhabited island for snorkelling or a fishing-village walk: shoulders covered, knees covered, and absolutely no swimwear off the designated ‘bikini beach’ if there is one. Most resorts will brief you before a guided trip.

  • Local islands fast during Ramadan

Resorts continue serving meals throughout Ramadan, but a guided trip to a local island during fasting hours means no eating, drinking, or smoking in public until sunset. Pack snacks for the boat ride back; iftar dinners are a beautiful experience to attend by invitation.

  • Tip the butler, the dive instructor, the boat captain

Service is included on resort bills, but a personal tip, $5 to 10 a day to the villa butler, $10 to 20 a dive to the instructor, a few dollars to the speedboat captain on departure, is the form. USD cash works everywhere.

  • Don’t touch the reef, or stand on coral

Sunscreen leaves a residue that bleaches coral; reef-safe mineral formulas are the rule, and many resorts will hand you one for free. Standing on coral to adjust a fin can kill a hundred years of growth in a moment. Float, don’t stand.

A starting point. Ocean can be specific about any booking on your trip.

Footnotes, by neighbourhood

Vaadhoo. Bioluminescent beach. On moonless nights, plankton illuminate the shoreline. A private boat takes you to the best spots. October to February for the best conditions.

Getting there

From London, about eleven hours by air.

From Malé, about 30 minutes by seaplane, or about three hours by water.
